The Dot Pattern Is Deliberately Uneven

Because each character is flanked independently, the rings pair up between letters and stand alone at the ends: x on its own gives ∘x∘, but POW gives ∘P∘∘O∘∘W∘ — one ring, then two, then two, then one. Read as texture it works, and that irregularity is what stops it looking like a plain dotted border. Read as spacing it is lumpy, which is why it suits a word and fights a sentence.

Text Triples in Length

Choosing a Word That Survives the Tripling

  • Halftone (Frederick Ives, 1881): a photographic screen breaks a continuous-tone image into dots of varying size — bigger dots for darker areas. The pattern is derived from the image itself, which is how a photograph reaches a printing press.
  • Ben-Day dots (Benjamin Day Jr., 1879): pre-made overlay screens of fixed dots, hatches and stipples, applied by hand to chosen areas of a plate. Not derived from any image — a way of dropping flat colour and shading into line art, which is why comics adopted it.
  • The Lichtenstein version (1960s): Roy Lichtenstein painted Ben-Day-style dots at enormous scale, turning a printing limitation into the signature of pop art. This is what most people actually picture.

What a Real Halftone Screen Is Doing Instead

The printing technique this style borrows from solves a problem text does not have. A press can lay down solid ink or no ink; it has no way to print a grey. A halftone screen fakes the missing greys by breaking the picture into a grid of dots and varying their size — large dots crowd together and read as dark, small ones leave paper showing and read as light. Stand far enough back and the eye blends them into continuous tone.

Colour printing runs the same trick four times over, one screen per ink, each rotated to a different angle so the grids interfere as little as possible. That is the difference between a halftone effect and a CMYK halftone: one screen produces a monochrome dot pattern, four separated screens reproduce a full-colour photograph. The faint rosette pattern visible in an old comic close-up is those four screens overlapping.

Can This Page Halftone a Photo?

If the dots have to carry tone — a photograph, a gradient, a shaded illustration — their size must respond to the source image, and only software that can read that image can do it. The ring is a long-standing mathematical operator rather than a recent decorative addition, so it renders on essentially every current phone, desktop and browser with no download. Where it fails, the failure is usually a policy rather than a font: a username field that rejects non-alphanumeric characters, or a form that strips symbols before storing.

One rendering caveat is worth knowing. The ring's exact size and vertical position are the receiving font's decision, so the same line can read as crisp dots in one app and as slightly floating circles in another. Where that matters, the image export removes the variable entirely.
